‘Sparkle’ Flops At The Box Office, Who’s to Blame?

Y'all got all hype saying how you just couldn't wait until 'Sparkle' come out to see Whitney Houston's final movie. Y'all even got Bobbi Kristina all dolled up and slaying at the Hollywood premiere. But you didn't go see it? Why?

According to box office numbers snapped from Yahoo! Movies, the movie dubbed as Whitney's passion project only made $12 million dollars this weekend. All of Whitney Houston's other movies -The Bodyguard, The Preacher's Wife, and Waiting to Exhale - have higher debuts. Her most successful film The Preacher's Wife grossed $68 million its opening weekend.

So, with this being the world's first viewing of your faves fave since her death.... I'm just saying.

    Let’s get something straight: Sparkle is playing on a thousand fewer screens than most films in the top 10, “Sparkle” took in a very respectable $12 million in the first 3 days with a budget of only 14 million (TheExpendables2 had a budget of 100M and did not recoup its budget after 3 days either). Sparkle had the second highest per screen average of the weekend and is the only movie among the newly released with a Rating “A” Cinemascore! It shouldn’t have any trouble making its money back.Therefore Sparkle is NOT a flop,even serious newspapers like the Washington Post and LA Times said it did “RESPECTABLE”!!!!
    Why didn’t you give the same negative write-up about the REAL flop movies like Beyonce’s “Cadillac Records” movie or more recently Tom Cruise’s “Rock Of Ages” ?

    What can I say? Black folks mourned the passing of Whitney Houston and her record sells got a temporary boost from her death. I guess black people are like everybody else and that is we go see movies based on reviews and what other friends and family are saying about the movie. The movie didn’t have great ratings or reviews and from reading some of the viewers’ reviews the movie is very weak.

    The movie has grossed $22.3 million in 4 weeks. This is not good and indicates that movie-goers skipped the movie. Let me give you some comparison examples. Paranorman an animated film has grossed $40.3 million in 4 weeks. The Possession movie in 2 weeks has made $21.1 million. Sparkle should have gotten a spike from Whitney’s death. It didn’t. Whitney is dead and people don’t have the extra money to waste on a badly scripted movie. End of conversation.

      If you had actually seen Sparkle, you wouldn’t have made your comment. It’s better than most of the movies that you got, and it actually got a A cinema score. The only problem is that black people would rather see themselves in stereotypical roles like Madea instead of seeing themselves in a better light. They just support comedies. And btw Whitney is playing a supporting role as a church mom in curlers, she hardly picked that role for box office success. Watch it before you judge. And finally Sparkle has a budget of 14 million dollars, so based on its budget it actually did fine as it already has grossed 24 million and will be a big hit on dvd.
