GAY MARRIAGE: This Year’s Milestones … So Far!
Oh how iLove the American Foundation for Equal Rights!
Matt Baume and his web series Marriage News Watch gives us a glimpse of all the successes and setbacks in the quest for marriage equality. I was going to try to count them all but it's so many! Here's a few that stood out to me:
*Supreme Court rules again that California's anti-gay law Prop 8 is unconstitutional.
*New Jersey lesislature passed gay marriage law. Governer Chris Christie vetoed it. An appeal is in the works.
*The Department of Justice refuses to honor parts of Title 38 that refuses to acknowledge same sex spouses of America's armed forces.
*A second federal judge rules DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) is unconstitutional.
*Amendment One, a bill in North Carolina, passes that rules 'marriage between a man and a woman' is the only civil union the state will honor. No rights or protections for any other couples in the state.
*President Obama announces support that same sex couple should be allowed to marry.
Matt says there are 17 lawsuits currently on the court docket against DOMA and recommends we continue to watch the Prop 8 appeal. Also, look out for more legislature on the ballots this November.
We're getting closer to marriage equality! I can see it happening soon!
